To the best of your knowledge, give us an idea of how many students attending your university are ex-cons. If you have actual data on the number of students who have been formerly incarcerated that are attending your university, we would like for you to share it with us by emailing it to Poll Data for us to review.
The list of colleges and universities which use the Common Application for admissions
continues to grow which may pose significant barriers for those seeking to gain admission into
those schools on the list. Without having the "poll" data to reflect all the "emails" I have received
on this "poll" question, my emails as of this writing reflect a consensus that higher education
institutions must not exclude applicants for "non-academic" reasons, and must not become a political
institution of exclusion.
Many who responded in emails stated
that they see this as another “political move” toward something greater; a means to an end: eliminate those
that are socially marginal and consolidate the political core.
The fact that the Common Application for admissions asks for a student’s disciplinary violation at an
educational institution from 9th Grade forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral
misconduct, that resulted in probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from the institution;
and whether the student has ever been convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, or other crime, has great
implications and consequences for those answering the affirmative.
Does a past violation trump a current 4.0 GPA? It is a question that should not even have to be asked,
let alone answered. Yet, it appears that it is a sign of more to come in weeding out those deemed
unworthy to better themselves.
While doing some research on the issue, we noticed with interest that there was a legislative “Bill”
(SB-8)
and
(AB-30)
introduced in Wisconsin that, if passed, would allow “ex-cons” to be fired from their elementary
educational positions. That some want the “Bill” to include university faculty as well.

All in all, it is worthy of a research focus on how the Common Application is being applied across the
colleges that are buying into expanding the "box" on felony discrimination and its effect on prospective
students.
With 4,146 colleges and universities in the U.S., 347 hardly support a “trend” in its use; however, the trend
to continue placing social barriers and structural impediments for those having an affirmative answer or response to the felony question is clearly supported by the research on felony disenfranchisement. --Bob Grigsby
